"Life jackets on the Greek island of Lesbos"

Sandra Hoyn's image "life jackets on the Greek island of Lesbos" moved and caught so many people's attention she was awarded the ' CIWEM changing climate' award back in 2016. In Hoyn's image she has captured a small beach covered in bright orange life vests that have been used by refugees that had come from Turkey to Greece.
Techniques Used:
Hoyn used a lot of techniques in post production, however she has used some techniques while shooting. First of all she has used a fast shutter speed fast enough to freeze the motion of the waves but not fast enough to freeze the movement of the clouds as you can tell they are dragging towards the right. The composition of the image makes us follow from the bottom left corner up the way, the orange life jackets almost act like leading lines as we follow it up along the coast line. Hoyn also has used a large aperture to ensure the whole image was in focus and sharp.
Post Production:
Hoyn has used a lot of post production in order to make it such a strong image. Hoyn firstly has adjusted the shadows and blacks to make the image dark and moody, she may have adjusted her highlights and white in order to balance the image. Vibrance and saturation may have been increased for the life jackets to become neon orange so viewers are dragged to the main focal point which is the life jackets.

"Wildfire"

Lindstrom was exploring the Canadian Rockies when she noticed "pinkish smoke". Due to increasing temperatures during the summer months there is less rain which means that the surrounding ground, plants an trees are not wet enough to stop the spread, so with high temperatures comes high winds which fuel the fire and make the fires spread faster. Wildfires are becoming more and more frequent every year and some of these fires are catastrophic.
Techniques used:
Lindstrom used a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the smoke and the helicopter. A large aperture was used as it is a very large image a possible panoramic image, she has used a large aperture to ensure the image is sharp. The composition of this image is similar to the previous however the use of the trees as leading lines pointing towards the fire, the biggest tree pointing towards the largest plume of smoke.
Post Production:
This image contains a lot of contrast, the contrast in the trees almost make it look like a painting. Shadows and black's would of been adjusted to make the image more dramatic. Saturation would of maybe also been adjusted to make the colour more realistic but more eye catching at the same time.
